Description
“Uzumaki” is a manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. The story is set in the small town of Kurôzu-cho, located on the coast of Japan, which is cursed by a mysterious and malevolent force known as “uzumaki,” meaning spiral. The series is compiled in a 3-in-1 deluxe edition, containing volumes 1 to 3.
The protagonist of the story is Kirie Goshima, a teenager who becomes entangled in the bizarre events of her town after her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, reveals to her the haunting truth about the curse. According to Shuichi, uzumaki is not a physical entity but a pattern or shape that appears in various forms in the town, including seashells, ferns, whirlpools, and whirlwinds.
As the story unfolds, the malevolent influence of the spiral starts to manifest itself in disturbing and grotesque ways. People in the town begin to develop spiral marks on their bodies, and the curse leads to a series of inexplicable and horrifying events. Shuichi’s father, in particular, becomes obsessed with the spiral and succumbs to madness.
The inhabitants of Kurôzu-cho find themselves trapped in the grasp of the curse, and it becomes increasingly difficult for them to escape its clutches. The spiral’s influence spreads like a whirlpool, pulling everyone deeper into its darkness, with seemingly no way to break free from its grip.
Junji Ito’s “Uzumaki” is known for its surreal and nightmarish imagery, exploring themes of psychological horror, obsession, and the inescapable nature of fate. The manga has garnered critical acclaim for its unique storytelling and chilling illustrations, making it a must-read for fans of horror and dark fantasy genres.
